With the first week of Wimbledon being over, it is time to have a look at what has happened, and to analyze some of the favorites and the failures. The men’s draw is easier to comment on as nothing sensational has happened. The first four players in the world have advanced quite convincingly to the second week of the tournament.
Tom Horrenstein, who works for the New York Translation Services and translates some of the comments coming from Europe notes that although number two seed, Serbian Novak Djokovich and number four seed, Scot Andy Murray dropped a few sets on their way to the last sixteen they look pretty convincing, and so are number one seed Rafael Nadal of Spain and Switzerland’s Roger Federer.

Last year marked a new record in the men’s matches in terms of duration and games played. American John Isner and Frenchman Nicolas Mahut played eleven hours in three days to reach the stunning 70-68 in the fifth set. Matt Simons, an employee of the Boston Translation Services and live interpreter of some of the commentaries, notes that the same players were drawn to play against each other in the first round, but this time Isner prevailed quite easily by three sets to love.
We can say that one of the big surprises of the tournament’s men’s draw is fifth seeded Swede Robin Soderling who was sent packing in the third round by unseeded Australian Bernard Tomic. Dan Gipson, a Seattle Translation Services reporter, reminds us that in the second round Soderling came from two sets to love to defeat former champion Lleyton Hewitt, but this time he gave a below par performance and was comprehensibly beaten.
So, heading into the second week we should not expect any major surprises, as the top seeds are expected to advance comfortably to the finals stages of the tournament. With that being said, however, there is always the potential for a large upset, and that is why we all watch the game. Probably a bit tricky is the match between Rafael Nadal and former U.S.open champion Juan Martin del Potro, but most likely Nadal will come through that one.
