The Kindle Fire Strikes a Blow for Android

During this past Christmas season the number of Android tablets that were shipped reportedly increased by a whopping 300% over 2010. No small part of that increase was due to the stellar sales performance of the Amazon Kindle fire, which uses a heavily modified version of the Android Operating System. It is estimated that 40% of the increased sales of Android based tablets was directly attributable to the Kindle Fire.

The growth of Android based tablets is also beginning to cut into the Apple iPad stronghold on the tablet market, with Apples lead dropping to 58% of all tablets sold. Yes Apple still garners a lion’s share ofthe market, but with the newer, cheaper and more powerful machines, like the recently released Acer Iconia Tab A200, it will be increasingly difficult for Apple to stop the erosion in their sales.

The newer full featured tablets are also aimed squarely at the Kindle Fire as well. The Fire, while it is an Android tablet, is not an Android compliant device. This means that it does not meet Google’s standards in order to be called such and in turn locks the Fire out of the Android Marketplace. The newer tablets for the most part however, while being more expensive,are fully Android compliant giving access to not only the Android App Marketplace,but Amazon and Barnes & Noble as well.
